Default Buying property in Portugal - 12-20-2008, 10:50 PM

Portugal is a very beautiful country, whether you are looking at the Algarve or taking a step towards a quieter lifestyle and considering Central Portugal. If you are looking for property, follow the simple rules:
  • Ensure the agent has a current AMI licence number.
  • Always meet the agent in a licensed office.
  • Ask to see the contract the agent has with the owner of the property.

DO NOT:
  • Be taken in by a fancy website.
  • Meet the agent in a bar.
  • Hand over any money to an agent who is not licensed by INCI - the registering body for all LEGAL estate agents in Portugal

A company which is licensed to operate in Portugal will display a 4-digit AMI number. Do not be misled by companies that claim to be registered in the UK and do not show this number, as they are not legitimate, and you have no legal redress if the deal goes wrong (as it can often do).

just to pick up on the point above, DO not hand over any money to a agent licensed or not licensed, it is illegal in Portugal for estate agents to receive deposit or purchasing money. not just for unlicensed agents as stated above it applies to all agents.
