St. Vincent is considered to be a heart of Cape Verde and in contrast to big city Praia (an official capital of Cape Verde) Mindelo is a cultural capital of the country and nice European town combining Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English architecture and doesn’t cede to Praia in area size. Harbor in Mindelo is more convenient for ship mooring.
Mindelo already has its large marine (three more are being built in St. Vincent). Ideology of local town hall is to give benefits to those building companies which projects are able to adorn and become sights of the town.
The most attractive and high budget carnivals of Cape Verde are held in Mindelo where popular actors and musicians from Brazil are invited. The prices in shops and restaurants are lower than in other islands of Cape Verde.
The opening of international Airport is stipulated to July 2008.
Lazaretto is suburban area of Mindelo and is elite residential parish with its own beaches 5 minutes away from town. All the front shore line of this area is already bought-up by the private owners, and there is no state land left.
There are two restaurants and local café in Lazaretto, specializing in octopus and moray eel cooking.
There are two groceries and in the near future a Portuguese company Tech Sill is planning to build Lazaretto complex which will include hypermarkets, swimming pools, restaurant chains and spa salons.
